Pal's story, The Long Ride Home

Come take a look at our first ride together!
Pal and Ty playing

I first met Pal as a gangly three-year old colt. His passion was carrots, and he stood eagerly at his stall door, looking out for anyone who might be carrying them. At the time, Pal had his own personal pet, a pygmy goat, who stood tethered right outside his door. They were quite a pair, the tall, leggy, copper colt, and the short and very stout little gray goat.

Though I have been interested in racing throughout my adult life, I had never actually owned a race horse. Well, ex-racehorses, if that counts. Pal was to be my introduction to the real world of racing, the backside. The thrills of sharing a partnership on a horse with fellow horse lovers. And also the heartbreak, as your colt gives everything he has, but comes up short.

That first year, Pal did not do much running. He could break from the gate very well, but did not know what to do once he got out there.

The second year, Pal became a real race horse, thrilling us all with his powerful runs, and winning three races! In two different states. He ran on the dirt, and he ran on grass. In 13 starts, Pal ran first three times, second once, and third once. He had matured into an elegant, classy, 17+ hand beauty.

Pal has proved himself, and he is coming home. With many thanks to my good friend Janet, his new home will be right here at Finch Meadow Farm. Pal and I will have many fun times ahead, as he begins his new life as a clicker-trained dressage horse.

Here is Pal in June, 2003, getting ready for his first start under new trainer, Joe Toye Another shot of him heading toward the saddling enclosure. Here you can see what a beautiful copper color he is.
Giving us a thrill, as he breaks from the gate in a rush! No win this day, but Pal comes home looking pleased and like a million bucks.
Another shot after the race. As he starts to collect up, you can begin to see how he might look as a dressage horse in the future! Pal's biggest win, in a starter handicap on the turf. He is such a big horse, he needs distance and did well on the grass.
A close up of his winner's circle photo. What a beauty he is!
